Because of the agency’s
commitment and recognition of strengthening family ties, the Kinship
Care Program within the Foster Care Department was
implemented.
Kinship Care is a branch of Foster Care that allows
children to reside with extended family members, under the
supervision of HDWC, in approved relatives’ homes.
Knowing the benefit children receive by living with relatives
(grandparents, uncles, aunts, siblings, etc.) or persons they know
and love, Harlem Dowling has taken the initiative to encourage and
support these unions.
By maintaining the continuity of family ties and tradition,
these children often stay in their own communities and are able to
remain in schools, churches, and amongst loved ones with whom they
are familiar, significantly reducing the level of disruption. This
continuity contributes to the overall well being of the children.
