Family Strengthening: Preserving The Family
Our Family Strengthening Program (also known as Family Preservation) connects parents and children with a safety net of services to address the nature of crises that cause stress and threaten a family's ability to remain intact. Some of the services provided are individual and/or family therapy and assistance with housing and employment. All of these services are intended to reduce the stress on the parent and reduce the risk of out of home placement for children.
Since its inception in 2005, the High Risk Teen Initiative in Far Rockaway Queens has achieved a success rate of 98% in keeping high risk teens safely at home in the community. The High Risk Teen Initiative provides on-site psychiatric services, substance abuse, and educational services. Services are designed according to the needs of the individual youth and family.
Harlem Dowling extends its track record of success in preserving families to the communities of Central Harlem, Washington Heights, and Jamaica. The agency collaborates with a host of community partners and organizations dedicated to preserving the integrity of families and keeping children safe and at home in the community. We believe the success of the agency's work is reliant upon the strength of families to find their own solutions, with the help of caring professionals.
Harlem Dowling's Specialized Services Program provides education, outreach and prevention to the community at large with regards to HIV/AIDS. The program includes the P.L.A.Y. (Positive Learning Advancing Youth), a youth outreach education program to reduce HIV/AIDS infection among adolescents.
Harlem Dowling has joined the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to promote the use and consumption of healthy foods and beverages.
Our newest HIV/AIDS initiative includes more prevention education, extensive outreach and collaboration with health care organizations in the community to reach a larger audience of at risk populations, primarily heterosexual African American and Latina Women.
With the support of our community, our Emergency Food Assistance Program provides critically needed food assistance to families served by Harlem Dowling and the larger community. Emergency Food Assistance may make the difference between a family's ability to keep their children at home or placing their children in out of home care due to lack of food. Emergency Food Assistance is provided along with nutritional guidance, budgeting and access to an array of services to help families meet their long term goals and needs.
The Service Coordination and Family Reimbursement Program works with families of severely developmentally delayed children through the provision of case management, advocacy, referral services, and cash assistance to avert out of home care.
